The Hermitage

Who are we?

Treargel is the Cornish name for a 'home of retreat'.

A place where you can get away from it all in beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

We provide accommodation and hospitality for people wanting to breathe deeply, rest quietly and think more clearly.

Quotes from recent guests

This is our third time staying at Treargel, each time has been a wonderful time re-energising and cleansing. The perfect way to rid yourselves of the winter blue's and welcome in all new life.

(Byre, Feb 23)

My first stay in the Byre, but my fifth visit to this wonderful place - Treargel. It never fails to refresh my body and soul. Thanks to Naomi and Martyn for their hospitality. Again! :)

(Byre, Feb 23)

Just a short time away from all the hustle and bustle to spend time alone in this beautiful place. What a wonderful retreat! Thoroughly enjoyed a walk on the coastal path this afternoon - beautiful blue sky and sea. Feeling refreshed and at peace.

Thank you Naomi for your welcome. Will definitely return.

(Hermitage Jan 23)

Weary from our work [abroad] we travelled a full day to reach Treargel. The rain and wind blew, the cold wrapped. But what a refreshing time we had. Thank you Naomi and Martyn, for your thoughtfulness ahead of our coming. Your patience with our late arrival. Your unflappable spirit. By the way, we loved the walk over to the headland. Talland Bay is a gem even at Christmastime. "This is our Father's world, He shines in all that's fair".

What a special month I have had - the start of a sabbatical - the perfect place for 'letting go', moving quietly, slowly, freely and re-centering. I am so grateful for the experience in every way and have received the beginning of renewal. Thank you Martyn and Naomi for your kind and unobtrusive presence and this holy spot. PERFECT + LOVELY! :)

What a beautiful, tranquil spot! Time seems to move slower here, which is just what I needed. I can't thank you enough for providing this space as well as your welcome and support. Blessings!

Thank you for holding the space that is Treargel. The Shepherds Hut, garden woods and labyrinth - and the Hermitage! - are wonderful, but what makes them truly so is the welcome extended. This land is lucky to have you be custodian for this time. And I m glad to have found you.

(Shepherd's Hut Sep 22)

The time and space gave me much clarity, and being able to just explore Cornish country, beaches, islands etc was just what I needed.

(Hermitage Aug 2022)

We had such a peaceful and restorative stay - thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful slice of the world with us!

(Byre Aug 2022)

Just what I needed, slept really well. Thank you. Definitely coming back.

Thank you for a special place for us to find part of ourselves again and to spend time in nature's beautiful surroundings. Don't really want to go back to the 'real' world. (Byre June 2022)

Thanks so much for your hospitality. Rest and walks and sea air have done us much good! Peace and all goodwill.

(Byre April 2022)

Really lovely place to retreat, so much to make the most of, I'll have to come back! Precious space to be with God and encounter His presence in and through everything. Thank you for such a warm welcome and beautifully kept space. Very special."

(Piggery April 2022)

A note of deep gratitude for the contemplative space you have created here. Everywhere is just filled with a sense of the sacred. (Byre Nov 2021)

Your retreat centre is a wonderful, peaceful place, and it was exactly what I needed. (Piggery Nov 2021)

There are so many things I have enjoyed. Morning sea swims whilst the sun rises at Portnadler Bay. Beautiful sunsets which turn the water and the skies golden and pink. And the moon rising big and low in the sky, lighting up the evenings and the coastal path home. Here I've often caught glimpses of the Kingfisher; a streak of blue across the pond, and I've sat and watched the leaves falling as Autumn arrives around the Hermitage. I've loved doing walking meditation around the woods and sitting in solitude, with the trees and stream. I've learnt a lot about loneliness and solitude and deep connection here. Thank you Naomi and Martyn for holding the space. I think Treargel is a very special place. (Hermitage Oct 2021)

Loved using Treargel for our church away day.  It was big enough to accommodate us but cosy enough to feel intimate.  I ate too much lunch though – lovely food! St Martin's Liskeard 2021

The photos don’t do this place justice, a great place to stay and right on the rugged Cornish coastline and just a few minutes by car to the beautiful village of Looe. Perfect place with space for family and children.     Neil

Fantastic stay at the Piggery, thoughtful touches throughout. Wonderful stay, thank you. (Piggery guest)

We had a fantastic time at The Byre and I would recommend this place to anyone. We played scrabble when it rained and you can walk to two lovely quiet bays for swimming on the National trust coastal walk. Looe is under 10 mins drive in the car. This felt like a home away from home and we loved that there was birdseed to feed the birds which we could see from the patio doors. We So hope to go back. (Byre guest)

Thank you all for a wonderful oasis in which to chill out and recharge batteries. Lovely walks and views. (Piggery guest)

Thank you for this beautiful, peaceful oasis in the midst of nature, so conducive to stillness, reflection, prayer and rest. The new kitchen roof and anti-slippery bands on the deck are very precious on rainy days! The kingfisher and deer were a lovely surprise! (Hermitage guest)

We had a wonderful stay and The Piggery was just perfect in every way. Clean, very well equipped and with all the great little touches such as plenty of washing up liquid, detergent for the washing machine etc. The setting is lovely; close to Looe but far enough away to make the most of the countryside and the peace and quiet. It was ideal for us visiting friends and relatives in the area and we've already discussed coming back to you in the next visit.

Thank you for your attention to detail and gentle presence. the labyrinth was particularly special. As was parking the car for the week and being in the Cornish air and coastline. Thank you, thank you, thank you. (Piggery guest)

I've loved my time in the Hermitage. It has been restful, grounding, and healing to be here; so close to nature and so well supported to go deeper into the preciousness of life. I've enjoyed walking the labyrinth. I've never done one before and found the information in the pack inspiring and practical in how to engage with it. I've enjoyed the space, the wood burner, the decking. Thank you for being so warm and welcoming and providing such a wonderful space for solitude and reflection.
